I had hopes for this high rated book to be a start of a good reading year for me but it wasn't meant to be. Hopefully it's not a forecast for the rest of the year.

A lot could have been trimmed already.

Sexual assault is not sexy! Rape is not sexy!

oh my I love alphaholes!!! And Carter is definitely that! I love their relationship! Starts out really rocky but damn it was good! Zoey is extremely smart and the field she goes into is perfect for her!

1. This book is NOT for most people.
2. This book is set in high school, students are 18.
3. There are nonconsent actions and it and includes the Hero or Anti-hero if you will.
4. The heroine deserves her story to be told.
5. So does the hero for that matter.
6. It's told in HER POV only.

Zoey stood up for herself throughout the entire book. I have MUCH love for her.
Carter was a serious alpha hole and did NOT change. Zoey and Carter's relationship was fraught with controversy and they knew it and owned it.

Here is a quote from Carter to Zoey.

“It takes some serious balls to be that brave. Either you’ve never been hurt before, or you’ve got balls of steel; either way, I’ve never met anyone like you.”

And this one

“Believe me, Zoey, it’s easy to tell when you’re on my bad side. You haven’t been since the first time I actually saw you, volleying back and forth with me in the middle of your greatest humiliation. You know when to fight and when to stand down. You’re perfect for me.” “Do you want me to fight tonight?” I inquire. Carter shakes his head. “Nah. I want to make love to you tonight.”

And to truly understand Carter and Zoey

“Does it lessen your arousal to picture me crying? Begging you to stop? Meaning it?” He hesitates for a second, deliberating over whether or not he wants to be honest, but then says, “No.” I let out a breath, but try to keep hold of my objectivity. So, he can take or leave my pleasure, but he prefers it. All right.

If you've made it this far and are still interested, then I urge you to read it.

It was definitely 5 stars for me.

This was an okay read for me. I ended up really liking Carter - but I felt as though it was a bit long and could’ve wrapped up sooner.

I just knew that I was going to hate this just as much as other people have. Nobody is more surprised than me about actually enjoying this! I knew my moral compass was off-kilter, but I didn’t know it got legs and just walked away. I speed through this and would wonder what was about to happen when I wasn’t reading it.

To get it out the way, this book is problematic as fuck. We all know it, and If you’ve read reviews then you know that this starts off with sexual assault. Along with that, there is dub-con, manipulation, and so much more.

Carter Mahoney. This guy needs major help and I ended up loving him. He was so unapologetically him throughout this whole book. No need to make excuses for him because he doesn’t care if you understand or like him or not. The fact that he genuinely liked Zoey and pursued her after what he did, was astonishing. Like sir, you crazy! But maybe I am too because I was rooting for him the whole time.

Zoey was spunky and I can see how she would interest Carter. She fought him at every turn but also tried to understand why he was the way he was. Instead of writing him off as she should, she formed this weird relationship with him and got to know him.

I liked these two together! The banter between these two was hilarious but also flowed so easily. Their sex scenes were hot and very erotic. Carter likes to be in charge and feed off the fear of Zoey. She started to learn when to submit and when to fight him. The push and pull in those scenes were super spicy.

What made this 4 stars for me was how it started to drag after halfway through the book. I was still interested, but I started to get a bit frustrated by Zoey’s obsession with the future and making sure to push Carter either away or see things like she did. She would always bring up Ericka or the future and it got annoying. You love him, told him so, but still rather act like this. Girl stop!

All in all, I enjoyed this one. I’m still surprised but oh well. I will have to pick up something else from this author.

Dark but good!

Ok so I finished this book last night. So let me start by saying please please heed the authors warning! If you have any sexual abuse/assault triggers please read this book with caution!

So.. my thoughts now! Well I LOVED IT! So many people messaged me and warned me it’s super dark (which made me wanna read it more

Bully romances with dark themes are among my favorite romance tropes. This is one of my absolute favorites that I have ready with a bully male lead. Carter is relentless in his pursuit of Zoey. The moment he sets his sights on her and he knows he has to have her. He manipulates people and events around him in order to gain exactly what he wants.

Zoey is a straight shooter. Her eye is always on the prize. A good girl. A straight A student who works hard for all her achievements and, while she is a good girl, part of her desires what she knows she shouldn't want.

One event sets them on the course of a volatile and all consuming relationship. A whirlwind that left me drowning in angst and excitement.

Carter (18) and Zoey (18)
Bully/dark romance, enemies to lovers, only Zoey’s POV, virgin FMC,
***Sexual assault*** every sexual encounter between Carter and Zoey was coerced (aka rape) and she excuses it every single time.
At first I felt sorry for Zoey because she’s definitely the victim throughout the whole book and on top of that, Carter is always so dismissive of everything she says and her feelings. But then she won’t even take a fucking morning after pill!?!? And she’s sad she’s not pregnant from her rapist!? Then, She blames herself when she finds out he cheated on her? After that I hated both main characters equally.
And everyone being against abortions? Hated that. We don’t need your backwards, Christian opinion on what women do with their bodies. Hated her mom too. Literally everyone in this book is toxic af.
This is tricky to rate because I hated it but I couldn’t stop reading it.
9-10 nonconsensual sex scenes. 4🔥
