The problem with romanticization of male sexual trauma.
Now going into this book I knew it would be a problematic and dark romance. The author literally said so in the first page. But it was problematic in a way I did not expect.
So we find out (late in the book) that Carter Mahoney is so dominant because he was sexually abused at the age of 12. And…. that is it. His trauma is not explained or explored further. And he is now “fixed” because of Zoeys love. It made it seem like the author did not care about Carters sexual trauma, yet we have an entire book that explores Zoeys.
I really wanted more backstory on Carter, it would have gave his character more depth, so maybe we could understand why he behaves the way that he does.

ngl the beginning was making me question myself and hate everyone but wow did this turn out to be a great book.. and I’m sorry I know he’s a bully but I love carter and zoey is such a baddie I’m obsessed. the banter was top tier truly

Books that I simply can’t put down and therefore stay up until 2am finishing immediately get 5 stars and this book just joined the ranks. Man oh man did I just love this book and all of the dark and twisted bits that were front and center. This was just the blueprint for what I want in a bully romance and I loved every second of it. Zoey is a better person than I am because of her ability to always see the best in people regardless of what they’ve done. Carter is the quintessential broken boy turned possessive lover and I can’t say enough how much I liked getting to see him through Zoey’s eyes. Literally I could have read another 100 pages of this story. It was so so good. That said def pay attention to the author’s note at the start and know that Sam did not play when she said this was a dark bully romance.

Mix feeling sekali dengan karakter Carter ini kalo aja ga ada adegan yg pertama itu pasti buku ini salah satu buku bully romance favoritku karna carter ini obsesi banget dan karakter psikopat yang manarik sekali. kita sma dengan zoey sama sama belajar dengan sifat si carter ini tapi sayang aku ga sepemaaf zeoy adegan yg pertama itu brutal sekali
walaupun akhirnya zoey suka juga dengan fantasy seperti itu dan mereka jadi pasangan yang seimbang juga

Zoey gets cornered in an empty classroom after her report on a football player's unsavory conduct gets him banned from the team his senior year. The guys cornering her have ulterior motives and she finds herself in a power struggle with the quarterback of the team. He wanted revenge, but now he has a fascination with Zoey and turns their bully victim storyline into an all-consuming whirlwind romance.. against Zoey's wishes. She just wants to graduate and go to college far away, but with Carter's unique brand of love caging her in, Zoey comes out fighting.
I loved Zoey and Carter's dynamic. At first, I thought I would have a hard time getting into a bully romance, having been bullied in high school myself. However, I was sucked in from the very beginning and finished the entire story in a few hours. Zoey was fiesty and brave. Carter was smart and took what he wanted from the beginning. Their unique and fast paced romance had me furiously flipping pages through dinner. I thought it wouldn't be for me, but now, I'm questioning my sanity because I loved it.
