We can add this to the list of books I accidentally finished in one sitting. I started it this morning and the next thing I know, it was dinner time and the book was ending…oops?
I definitely liked Vasalie as an FMC. She’s unique in her disability and the way it is portrayed throughout the book. She’s also a mix of morally grey and desperate that I think was really intriguing.
What I think really made this book shine for me, though, is the supporting characters. Laurent is one of my favorites and I want to get more of him and maybe his history as we go. I also really like Anton. He’s a bit of an enigma and you know there is a lot more to him than you get at first glance.
I will say the beginning felt a little slow for me. I think it had to do in part with the writing style being flowery for my tastes especially for any dancing related scenes. I also think it just dragged a little until we really started getting more dialogue from other characters, and less internal monologue from Vasalie. That said, it picks up very quickly and I was never bored.
All in all, it was a great debut and I am really looking forward to what will come next after that ending!

I’m so disappointed with this book.

I loved Anton, him and Basille were prolly the only things I really enjoyed about this book to be honest.

You had me in the first half don’t get me wrong,
but the ending just felt like such a cop out. It felt like unnecessary plot points were being added to make the book longer. I just felt like it was all so unnecessary.

Also, don’t get me wrong, I love that this book has chronic illness rep, but I hate how it was presented. There is no way after everything she goes through that she can do a day of rehearsals and intense dance recitals etc. I get pushing through and overcoming challenges etc, but it was such bad representation in my opinion, and there were times where I felt like this rep was only there when convenient for the plot.

Finally, the ending just felt like a rip off iron flame / mockingjay part 1.

Thank you for the ARC!

Brilliant debut. Romance, political tension and the world building was sublime.
I enjoyed the writing style, I found it really grabbed me in and felt very whimsical!
While I did see the plot twist coming, it was enjoyable.and the ending left be really excited for what is next to come.

The representation of chronic illness made the main character incredibly realistic and along the story she finally accepts the illness after the grief which is something a lot of us can relate to.

One of the best romantasy novels I’ve read this year

Another banger

Things I loved:
  • Anton
  • The dancer concept
  • Political/court intrigue for days
  • The friends Vas makes
  • The worldbuilding
  • The slow burn romance

Things that I didn’t love:
  • Slooooow beginning, super fast end (middle was perfect, though, and I still liked the end)
  • The thing with
    Copelan
    was just unnecessary and distracting
  • I don’t understand her father very much. I love that plot but I need more info.
  • Info-dumping in the beginning (contributed to the very slow pacing there)
  • Vas has a disability and, while I appreciate that it contributed to how she danced and do NOT mind that she pushed through pain, it never actually seemed to have a truly negative effect. I love this strength in pushing through things (Ive got a disability and all to familiar with it), it’s okay to show that sometimes (or a lot of times) disabilities are real hindrance beyond what we feel internally/emotionally. You can show all the aspects of it.  I’m curious what happens in Book 2 if Vas is in the middle of a war. There’s a reason why soldiers (in the real world) don’t generally stay in if they get a disability: it’s a liability. Just saying!

I enjoyed this and absolutely WILL be reading book 2.
