The Other Valley is a profound literary novel about a young girl, Odille, who takes you on a heartfelt journey in a valley that is neighbored to itself 20 years in the past and 20 years in the future. It is an intriguing concept about time and how interference amongst towns is highly lethal; just one small interaction in the past can completely alter the history of the neighboring valleys, which is why travel amongst them is highly restricted. Only family members of those who have passed away may petition to travel to view another valley.

But one day Odille recognizes two visitors from the future as the parents of the boy she loves. Once she sees them, she knows that he is about to die and that she can't say or do anything to prevent it... or can she?

In summary, this Scott Alexander Howard has delivered a captivating novel that prompts readers to reflect on the intricacies of human nature and the choices that define our lives. I highly recommend this book because of the compelling blend of time travel, relationships, character development and profound storytelling!

Slėnyje įsikūręs miestelis, kurio vakaruose įsikūręs tas pats miestelis, tik veiksmas ten vyksta dvidešimt metų atgal, o rytuose - irgi, tik dvidešimt į priekį. Kontaktai tarp šių miestelių, aišku, draudžiami, išskyrus labai išskirtinius atvejus. Iki kol pagrindinė personažė pamato būtent tą vieną iš išskirtinių atvejų. Istorija labai įdomi, joje gal net daugiau laiko skiriama ne tiek jos pačios vystimui, bet ir visai filosofijai bandant paaiškinti būtent kodėl pamatyti ateitį ar praeitį draudžiama ir pavojinga.

Skaitosi lengvai, net jei autorius neišskiria dialogų skyrybos ženklais. Pabaiga kiek atvira ir aš net visai mielai priimčiau knygos tęsinį, bet suprantu, jog čia tikrai ne tokia intencija. Parašyta labai gražiai, analizuojant tiek abstrakčias idėjas, tiek veikėjų emocijas iš skirtingų pusių, o pati istorija labai įtraukianti. Puikus autoriaus debiutas.

This is a truly excellent book, and it's really hard to believe it's the author's debut novel. A gorgeous speculative thriller, following the lead of some of science fiction's greatest. A time-travel story about grief, drive, and inevitability, with some beautiful writing that was a real pleasure to read.

We follow Odile as she applies for an apprenticeship at the bureau that decides who gets to visit the neighboring valleys, which are the same valley, twenty years in the past and twenty into the future. She navigates relationships with her classmates, fellow applicants, and her mother, as she tries to find her place while hiding her secret: one of her friends is destined for tragedy.

I was really enjoying this book, and then it took an unexpected turn in the middle. We left Odile of the present, and followed Odile of the future as she approaches the 20th anniversary of the book's first half. I found this a really exciting and refreshing development – rarely does a book explore the same character separated by so much time and wear. A lot of people found the second half boring, but I savored it and enjoyed taking it slow, before the inevitable heart-pounding finish.

This book was a really wonderful experience, despite its heavy themes. It asks some tough questions. Would you preserve the natural course of things, if you knew it would lead to tragedy? Would you betray your values to save someone you love, or yourself? Could you stand to live in a world you know will never give you what you want? I absolutely loved this, and I'll be the first in line to read whatever Howard writes next.
