I finished this book in about four hours and omg what can I say? It was such an amazing book. Beverly Jenkins you have outdone yourself once again. I can’t wait to pick up another book of yours.
She’s has such an amazing way of just coming up with romantic plots and twists. Her writing is phenomenal and I recommend this to anybody who loves to read Historical Romance.

Another wonderful book from Queen Bev! Our heroine this time is Viveca, who is a determined female doctor in a time when women were not widely accepted in this role. The man who hired her, Nate, expected a male doctor to arrive, and is not at all pleased to find the doctor to be a woman. Despite clashing early, the two find themselves attracted to each other, and Nate slowly realizes how incredible Viveca is at her job, and changes his short sighted views.
I love a romance with a character who starts off unlikeable but changes, so this was right up my alley. I did find the book became a bit long winded in the last third, however that’s mostly because I’m not a huge fan of reading about couples once they are established. The ending was really gripping though, and the foreshadowing towards it stopped any whiplash, which I’ve found in some of her other books. Probably a favorite from here for me so far, and I can’t wait for the next one.

Vivid tells the story of Dr. Viveca Lancaster, a black female physician in the late 1800s, who relocates from California to practice medicine in a small black community in Michigan. She faces challenges as she works to win the trust of a community unused to female doctors, led by the mayor, Nate Grayson, who had expected the doctor he hired to be male. Nate is ready to fire Viveca and find a man to be town doctor instead, but she holds her ground and is determined to win them all over.
This book was entertaining and the characters were all generally likable. The author wove just-post-emancipation black American history into the story, which I found helpful and interesting. While reading, I realized that seems to be a small but important period in black history that too often gets skipped over or diminished by the larger emancipation story, so I was glad to read more about it.
All that said, this is definitely a romance novel, which isn’t my usual genre. (For “romance”, I tend to favor more contemporary fiction in which the romance that develops is more based on personality and character development and isn’t always the main point of the story.) Be forewarned— this book gets pretty steamy and was a little too steamy for my taste. However, if you are a romance reader and tend towards steamy romances, you might like this one better than I did!

I highly recommend you read Indigo prior to Vivid.

This book had a lot going on but the plot twists made it so much fun. I really enjoyed the characters and getting to know them for such a long period of time. Loved the story and how the author made such a wonderful, small town for everyone. Great romance read!

I absolutely adored Viveca and the daughter Magic. I think it was how Vivid's confronts the town (and other main character's) sexism and judgment on her own terms. She encourages acceptance of not just herself but of others in the town that are wrongfully judged. Magic is smart, clever, caring and free spirited. She's a joy to read in this story.
