Fascinating character in history and very important information but I didn’t love the authors voice. The information, while interesting was very disjointed

Really loved this book from start to finish. The author wove together an excellent story of a rare female immigrant success story in the early 1800s. It is a giant bummer to see how similar rhetoric is around reproductive rights is now as it was in the 1850-60s.

This book was very interesting and informative. I liked how the author kind of set the scene of the story. The book was about Madame Restell but knowing what is going on in the world around her really informs on the service she provided. Wow. Just the more things change the more they stay the same. Women have been dealing with the same shit since the beginning of time. I listened to this book and I really enjoyed the interview with the author at the end. I think I will have to check out more of her stuff if she has any.

Madame Restell was a very fascinating woman, and this history of abortion in the 1800s was enlightening, and also uncomfortably similar to today. The writing style was very accessible, but a little too limited in some places. I didn't appreciate the more modern asides from the author, like remarking on how Madame Restell might behave on twitter. Additionally, there were sometimes claims that I think didn't have enough evidence or were not expanded on enough. The one that stood out to me the most was the assumption that Madame Restell must have treated women of color, because a Black woman was aware of her and gave her information to a friend. I would have liked some more digging on this topic, especially since the book does not really cover race much in regards to women's rights at the time.

Such an enthralling book that I believe should be required reading in high school history.

Access to abortion should be wholistic and easily accessible to all.
