might come back to this eventually and it was well written and narrated i just couldn't get into the subject matter, and haven't felt motivated to come back in well over a year so it feels like time to move on and see if my mood changes some other time!

A great biography with a great narrator! Yes, history doesn't repeat itself but it does go on and on like a broken record.
Envelope yourself in the mid-1800s New York and encounter the world where abortionists advertise in newspapers and have fancy houses on 5th Avenue. Women may not have had the vote but they had a but more power over their bodies. Here you'll find Madame Restell, a woman before her time and perfect for her era.

Riveting, Timely and Brilliantly told! I could not put this book down! Madame Restell definitely deserved her own book and there is no better time to release it than right now. Absolutely loved the author had historical details interwoven with current events. The perfect book for anyone interested in women's history. A MUST READ.

First non-fiction book in ages that I've actually finished! Great information about the attitudes towards abortion, sex, women, marriage, and the medical profession. Also great perspective to include some context of attitudes on immigration, the economy and race in the US and NYC at the time. I could hear the author's modern voice throughout - I felt aligned with her pro-abortion takes and so it made me laugh. Not sure someone on the fence would appreciate her sarcasm, though. Do recommend for modern feminists trying to round out their history on the treatment of women in the U.S.
