From the punny and funny chapter titles to the dry humor of the supporting characters this was an amusing and fun read. It is not high art but it is high escapist fun and that’s a worthy reason to read.
I appreciate a series that mostly ties up a story in a single book. I’ll look forward to these character and settings again and I want to know more about the overarching conflict but I’m not left unsatisfied by the end of the first book in the Calder Academy series.

We are back in the world we weren't ready to leave. Our main character, Clementine, lives at an academy where they send people who have lost control and sometimes kill people. This is their last place before prison. Except for Clementine and her family, who ran the academy. Clementine has never left the academy and has never had an opportunity to use her magic, let alone lose control of it.
A storm comes, and nightmares are set loose. They nightmares do kill.
Of course, we have found family, Romance, character coming to realizations about herself, and mystery.

This is a solid 3 stars. It was fun, but it definitely could have been better. There was a lot of up and down, serious action that fizzled out or it was alot of info. Info that made hardly any sense because the book wasnt good at explaining whats happening. Now I know the build up of trying to figure out whats happening is usually great and the whole point but this just didnt hit it well. The book made such a big deal of “Jude Abernathy Lee” being this huge spectacle. I was so curious as to what he was, why he was so special but then it just ended up being so annoying that by the time we learned what was going on I was already over it. The monsters and figuring out what they were was interesting! The whole magic not working at school and then that being broken and everything going haywire was fun. The love between the MCs didnt really feel all there and felt rushed. Overall it was okay, I will read the next one when it comes out in a year. I learned alot about citrus fruits reading this too.

Good YA novel. Some of the plot lines you could see coming ahead of time but an easy, enjoyable read.
I tried so hard but it was truly not for me. The main character was annoying af, the plot was no cohesive, and certain elements were factually incorrect.
