This is my first League tie in novel and it was very well written and Ambessa is an interesting character. She’s so driven by ambition and what she thinks her father figure would want for her, that she often brushes off that little voice in her head that tells her she’s doing the wrong thing. She’s crazy ruthless and bloodthirsty.
That dude Menelik straight up created the monster and then had the nerve to give leadership of the clan to someone else. Didn’t even have the balls to tell her. So many things could have been avoided if he just talked to his 2 choices.
But she loves her children and her husband and it was good to see those sides of her. I love her character in Arcane and I like here.

This being a standalone it didn’t give every character quite enough room to breathe. But we see lovely Mel and learn more about the Black Rose.  We also get the back story of Rell. I’m kinda hoping for another novel for her.

pretty good! mel medarda is beloved to me and Difficult Mother stories always hit. however this is a fantasy book based on league of legends lore so there's a lot of namedropping and some lore dumps that ultimately dont REALLY serve

DID NOT FINISH

didn't care, felt like intrigue but just talked about these people like i should know who they are instead of setting up the stakes and who they were.

met expectations! expanded on mel and ambessa’s backstory while staying faithful to arcane’s established lore though i'd say league wiki is a necessary preread bc half the subtext would fly over one’s head without a smidge of background knowledge about noxus. didn’t shy away from ambessa’s cruelty and hypocrisy with no attempt to justify or rally for her redemption and i deeply appreciate this choice for keeping her character grounded and uncompromising. had high hopes for the antagonist only for him to come out plain and juiceless but ambessa has set the bar unrealistically high i can't fault c.l. clark for not being able to match it. big news is another sapphic league character has joined the roster thanks to clark's generous service and mel medarda it's never too late to be bisexual
