This book is ABSOLUTELY FENAMONAL! I cannot stress this book's mastery of bringing scenes and characters to life enough! I feel like I got to see Arcane season 3 as a book!
Speaking of that, I need to rewatch the show because, OMFG, this book changed so much! Ambessa's character always has been compelling, but now? Ah! It is so much deeper, so much more painful, so much more cry-worthy!!!
I don't say this often, but please, do yourself a favor and go read this amazing book. You'll be doing yourself a favor<3

I was beyond excited to learn more about the Medarda family after watching the Arcane TV show. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting but I did enjoy the story. We're following Ambessa trying to claim the throne to be become the next leader of the Noxian Empire. I sometimes felt the story lost its focus sometimes and I had problems with the pacing, but I really appreciated how they humanized Ambessa. In the TV show, she felt a little too one dimensional to me but in her story, you see her complicated relationships. I wanted a little bit more from her character (especially when there was this one reveal towards the end that should have felt like a bigger deal for a character like Ambessa.
Not being chosen to be the successor even though she was convinced that's what he wanted.
). It was almost there, but I think a lot of things were happening with the Rose Society (who were not in the book as much as I thought they would considering the show), the politics, the relationships, etc that it just didn't have enough space to delve deeper into some of the things. It also did just feel a little bit like a set up for a new character. But I did enjoy it overall. I like the author's writing.

looooove this voice actor i’m so glad she voiced her own character

OH. MY. GOD.

I knew I was going to love this, but WOW. I devoured it. Absolutely inhaled it. Arcane has been living in my brain rent-free since season 2 dropped, and while I’m dying to see what happens next in Noxus, this book was exactly what I needed to fill the void.

We follow Ambessa, who is just as ruthless, powerful, and terrifying as I hoped she’d be, but also so much more. She’s strategic, loyal (in her own way), and willing to do anything for her family.

We also got Mel’s POV! Hello?? Absolutely heartbreaking. Seeing her struggles and the weight of her family’s legacy made me love her character even more.

I was obsessed with learning more about Ambessa, Mel, the Medarda clan, and all the messy politics of Noxus. Also, the Black Rose? The mages?? The CODE??? I was SAT.

And the writing??? Perfection. C. L. Clark GETS these characters. The pacing is perfect, and the tension in every scene had me hooked. I’ve been in a reading slump, but I flew through this book because I physically could not put it down. Every chapter pulled me in deeper, and before I knew it, I was at the end, screaming.

Now, do I play League of Legends? No. Am I ever going to? Probably not. But the lore is chef’s kiss, and this book made me even more obsessed with it. Every second of this story was amazing, and now I’m sitting here, dramatically staring into the distance.

If you love Arcane, this book is a must-read.
It’s everything I wanted and more. Thank you, C. L. Clark, for feeding us.

Also, huge thanks to Hachette and Orbit UK for the review copy, you made my year!

An easy read and solid book. Does its role at answering questions about Mel, Ambessa and the conflict with Black Rose perfectly. I wish we had gotten a few scenes from the book animated in arcane, specifically Mel and Kino moments.

It did feel lacking on some point  though.
My biggest issue with it was the politics. If you are used to reading books with complex politics, it is... quite simplistic. I understand that it was not the point of the book, and it was meant as more of a character study/expending on the lore, but reading some interactions and political choices in there was truly puzzling. It felt a bit ridiculous even at times.

Overall an enjoyable read, and an absolutely necessary one to fully understand Ambessa and some of the Arcane plot lines.

I was expecting a lot more action and some political maneuvering, but this was almost all political maneuvering. It was a lot slower than expected, but provided a lot of interesting backstory for Ambessa and Mel.
