A mother’s reluctance to accept and grieve the death of her son pushes her to keep his memory and essence alive.

A goodbye to Santiago.
An acceptance of M not being Santiago, but rather Monstrilio.
And later, a goodbye to Monstrilio
Heartbreaking, but beautiful.

If you're looking for a scary, horror book, I don't think this is it. It's more of a reflection of grief and maybe learning to let go. I don't really feel there's character development. I feel the characters healed from their grief or moved on from it...but they themselves as people did not become better people or develop (they learned to move and gain thier new live) which is probs a horror aspect in the book. But i enjoied the monster aspect.

i find myself feeling quite comforted by m’s story

Very human despite being about a monster

I liked the first half of the book, but the second half lost me. I suppose I was expecting more of a grief monster and this wound up being a sort of coming of (monstrous) age. The time skip after Lena's chapters stopped me short, though the very last few chapters made up for what I thought I'd lost at the start of Joseph's chapters.

Wow, I’m so glad I gave this a chance because I loved this much more than I was expecting. The loss and grief of losing a child, its impact and aftermath on a family, and what defines a human and family. I loved how each part was broken down from each person’s POV. I loved M’s raw and vulnerable M’s character was with dealing with becoming human, but ultimately choosing himself and not denying who he is. I loved his growth as a blob, monster, human, monster again. I really liked Papi and Mami’s relationship as parents and how they tried so hard to hold onto Santiago to finally accepting M and letting him go. I think M actually helped them process their grief and bring them together.
