This is one of the only horror books where I enjoyed the social commentary.

I’ll be thinking about this book forever. Something about M’s part had me tearing up the entire way through. I wish I could form into words how this book affected me so.

2.5 - found this one really disappointing, mainly because you don't get much more depth to the narrative than you get from the blurb itself. The M section was the best by quite a margin, however, and made the book feel like a vehicle to get us to that character - in this way, the first 250 pages are almost superfluous, and I wish that the author did more with the final part, as this is where he is the most creative and playful with his characters and narrative.

fantastically complicated meditation on loss and acceptance with a monstrous edge. the last part in particular is a knockout, mixing naivety and desire with ease. so very unique.

So beautifully written and unique. I expected straight up horror but this was much more tragic magical realism.
Even the most graphic scenes don't make you scared of M, more just dissappinted in him, because ultimately you're rooting for him to be happy. The ending challenges our ideas of what success and happines  looks like for someone like M, which fit really well into the queer narrative.
Looking forward to Córdova's next book!

The universe aligned in a very specific way for me to read this book. I'm filing it away under "reasons why I know that everything happens for a reason". Monstrilio captivated me from start to finish. I would have finished it in one day had I not been pacing myself in order to savor it for as long as I could.
