I've bounced around with how I felt about the book, but after finishing it off, I would label this book as: a general introduction into a variety of mental health struggles. If you're reading/listening to this novel in hopes of an in-depth understanding of the topics, I wouldn't entirely say that would be found in this novel. That said, it succeeded in giving a general review of each topic, with a broken-down and easy to understand explanation of the science behind it all. Tips, book recommendations, empathy, and guidance was well-detailed. I appreciated the way the author acknowledged the complexities of each topic she delved into and didn't feel like it was solely explained through the eyes of science without the empathy of understanding how these mental health struggles can come about and affect a person's life.

I got into the book in the hopes of understanding some coping mechanisms especially as a person with friends and family whom struggle with such. And while I was sometimes off-put by what felt like paragraphs throttled with curse words, not out of necessity or it fitting into the sentence, but more so to add as many as possible to make it appear relaxed... it somewhat pulled me away from the purpose of the novel. That aside, it lightened up and became more purposeful as it went on. Regardless, I was still left with some notes I was able to take from the book to use in moving forward.

I had used the audiobook version of this book which was read by the author herself. While it was nice to be able to hear the voice of the author, I found it jarring being faced with audio that was breathy and echoey, with some mistakes and throat clearing, detectable background conversation, and mistakes with needing repeating. So while not a professionally done audio book, I was still thankful to be able to have the option of listening to this novel and appreciate the time taken in creating it. Truthfully, once you get over that fact, and review the audio book like a podcast, it becomes less jarring.

In all, if you're looking for a relaxed introduction into the world of mental health and the ways of navigating it, I would definitely recommend the book. Just be aware that you may not want to have your nan or older family member(s) listen to it if they aren't all that appreciative of cursing. It certainly wouldn't be the book for them, haha! But if that is more than appropriate for yourself or others in reviewing, I would definitely recommend this book for a general understanding and advice of these topics.

I was listening to this on audio and I just couldn't concentrate on the content for all the cursing. I'm a bit of a potty mouth myself, but this was excessive and for me, it took away from what was actually being said.

Audio is too high pitched of a voice and the book just cusses excessively. I assumed it would have some but it was just every other word.

I found this book useful and accessible as intended, thought the abundance of cursing and slang threw me off in some passages. This is definitely a book that can be reflected on repeatedly, and I appreciated Harper's non-nonsense attitude towards mental health and learning what works for you as an individual with varied needs.
