That ending slapped me in the face

Emily Porter is on a quest that will take her to the secret underground of Europe and the inner circles of three ancient orders—one determined to kill her, one devoted to keeping her alive, and one she must ultimately save.

The Progeny is the present-day saga of a 400-year-old war between the descendants of “Blood Countess” Elizabeth Báthory, the most prolific female serial killer of all time, and a secret society dedicated to erasing every one of her descendants. The Scions, descendants of Bathory’s victims, have sought retribution through the centuries by killing her female progeny. Emily is one such progeny, hiding under a new identity after having her memory wiped. Despite her remote location, two men find her. One of them can’t be trusted.

According to legend, Elizabeth Báthory, a Hungarian countess, tortured and murdered more than six hundred girls in the sixteenth and seventeen centuries with the help of her servants. They were put on trial, but only the servants were executed. The countess was confined to her castle until her death in 1614. Contemporary scholars question the historical evidence, believing her arrest was nothing more than politically motivated slander. Such is the backdrop for this terrific novel. It is filled with adrenaline, star-crossed romance, and plot reversals that kept my attention throughout. I don’t read horror novels, and this isn’t one. Readers of mainstream and Christian fiction will enjoy it in equal measure. The Progeny is wonderfully suspenseful, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels or historical thrillers. My pulse pounded as I tore through the pages, and I can’t wait to read book #2 in the series. Nicely done, Tosca Lee! 4.5 stars.

Published Date: May 2016
Genre: Christian fantasy; Christian suspense
Read-alikes: The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Nine by Rachelle Dekker, Angelology by Danielle Trussoni, Eyes Wide Open by Ted Dekker

This would've been the perfect "relaxing on the balcony drinking rum on the rocks in the sun" book if 2 weeks of 12-hour work days hadn't happened RIGHT as I picked this up.

Very entertaining conspiracy thriller with a MC who has willingly wiped her mind. Easy to make comparisons to Dan Brown, but isn't dripping with unjustified pretension. I'll write a better review once I'm not sitting in an airport terminal.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC! Even if they gave it to me 1 day before the book released lol it's all good.

Happy Reading, friends!

A real departure for me. This story was truly inventive with lots of twists and turns and a cliffhanger, oh my. Definitely held my attention and should be a hell of a continuation. Not too sexual or too scary for younger readers.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down until I finished. This novel starts out introducing us to Emily, a young woman who has willingly had her memory erased in order to make a new life for herself. However, in this case the past won't stay buried as Emily's old life comes back to haunt her. As the reader, you'll soon find yourself swept up with Emily in a tale of mystery, thriller and conspiracy as she finds herself hunted by a secret society set on revenge that they hope to gain by killing. The book is fast paced and will keep you guessing until the very last page as along with the protagonist, you're trying to guess who can or cannot be trusted, as well as what kind of secret would make someone willingly erase their memories

The TWISTS!
3.8 stars

You know how books will claim to have twists that you'll never see coming, but you totally see them coming and you're just like, "Meh. Okay," but you still enjoy the ride because you're not a bitter soul who needs everything to be perfect or else you'll give 1 star reviews and trash talk something that's actually really good and make people looking for a good story miss out on the joy of the read and you should probably go to therapy to deal with your issues but you have a bad attitude about that and "I don't need therapy. Therapy is for the weak!" so you sit at home, alone, watching daytime tv and the news and complaining about your back hurting and you're getting fat but you refuse to exercise and all you ever eat is McDonald's and potato chips and you haven't called your mom in a month and... where was I going with this?

So this book had twists that I saw coming BUT THEN THERE WERE DOUBLE AND TRIPLE TWISTS THAT THREW ME OFF AND I HAD A GREAT RIDE! I dunno, maybe I was off my game while reading, but I liked that I couldn't quite figure things out.

The whole thing was a little weird and crazy and I enjoyed it.

Content warning: some mild language, mentions of sex (nothing explicit) and a bit of violence.

*I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for sharing my honest opinion*
From the moment I read the blurb of this book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy. Tosca Lee’s The Progeny has so many of my favorite things in one book, which had me scared, but excited. Why scared? Well, I’d been reading quite a few books lately that had so many things I love, and they just didn’t work together. In The Progeny, this wasn’t the case. Combining elements of top-notch YA fiction with the fast-paced thrillers we can’t get enough of this book is at the top of my must read list for 2016.

The Progeny‘s unique backdrop has you instantly entranced. Who is this girl? Why did she go to such lengths to wipe her memory, and who can she trust to be telling her the truth? These questions will keep you turning the pages, and on the edge of your seat the entire book as reveal after reveal occurs and you spiral towards the shocking conclusion that will have you breathless and ready for book two. I cannot wait for the followup book as there are still so many questions I need answered, and, no spoilers here but I have to say that with the setup Tosca Lee gave us at the end of this book, the next one is going to be even better.

If you’re a history buff, a YA fan, and like your thrillers dipped in action packed conspiracy, or even just one of the above – The Progeny is a book you need to grab a copy of ASAP.
