Great book to understand trauma and somatization. Unfortunately, quite dense and the intended audience is for folks who have fluency in psychological terms. Some descriptions in the book about specific traumatic circumstances might be triggering. For these reasons, I actually recommend other books about these topics first, and tend to encourage folks to watch YouTube summaries about this book instead.
good if u want to read a psychology textbook. I didn’t but you each their own

I’m very glad I read this, I learned so much.
This call to action is truly a necessary read, I wish the people in power cared about this research as much as Dr. Van der Kolk does. This book opened a new perspective on trauma for me that has helped me not only understand myself better but also my friends, colleagues, and fellow Americans. The situation is dire, we have laws being passed to force children into existence and yet no systems set up to ensure their success. In fact we have many systems set up to profit on their generational traumas and deepen the impact these traumas have on our society as a whole. I appreciate the perspective that Dr. Van der Kolk explores which is a more holistic approach to trauma recovery. To have an entire country dependent on medications instead of focusing on mind body connection, only serves pharmaceutical companies and does not address the root problem of systemic child abuse and lack of trauma awareness. I can personally attest to the benefits of yoga and mindfulness on my daily life and the impacts they have had on my emotional regulation skills. Instead of dosing children with antipsychotics to keep them compliant, the solution needs to center around building the emotional regulation skills needed to be self regulating and contributing members of society. The sections of the book that focused on the relationships between trauma and physical pain, autoimmune diseases, and obesity was the most eye opening for me. I have often heard the sentiment that certain people "just have everything wrong with them," and this research really explains why. Early trauma and generational trauma predisposes these people to further health issues. This connection really shows how important it is to consider all the moving pieces when responding to public health crises like obesity, since in the past a lot of these issues were seen as moral failings instead of systemic issues. It is a dense listen/read but really important.
