it's hard for me to review this book because i read it on and off over the course of a couple months and frankly don't remember some of my own opinions on it anymore.
what I do know is that this book seriously changed, or at least helpfully redirected, many of the ways i perceive things. it was emotionally difficult to read and incited a lot of soul-searching, a lot of empathy for others, a lot of newfound empathy for myself. it was fascinating and informative and accessible, even to readers like me who lack a strong hard science background in psychology or neuroscience.
i understand its limitations. it was published a decade ago, and i know that a minority of the chapters do contain what is now considered disputed or questionable science. i know that some people label van der Kolk "problematic," and it may be impossible to ascertain whether he is deserving of that label. his strength as an author was in his ability to illustrate his point through anecdotes deriving from his clinical practice, yet I found myself constantly wondering if all his clients had consented to having their stories told.
a psychology book this well-known even outside scientific circles was bound to cause an uproar among its readership, and i don't claim to have all the answers regarding what our opinions about it "should" be. i just know that i learned a lot and would love to read more nonfiction like this.
