I had to take my time with this one. There was a lot of science that I skipped through and it may make this book seem not as approachable. But it is used to prove that trauma does affect our bodies long term and the true blessing is that relief is possible. This book and the authors research offers confirmation and hope.

Found some information accurately critiquing the studies and science forming the basis of this book. I'm not interested in pseudoscience.

this is like the most hyped book ever & i came in with super high expectations. in many ways van der kolk did not disappoint: the body keeps the score is a wealth of useful, productive information on trauma. trauma!!! origins, types, neurological effects, treatment, case studies, etc. etc; all written in a relatively accessible and friendly voice that keeps you engaged and turning pages. would really recommend this book if you've experienced traumatic events and/or if you (like me) suspect you're living with trauma and its many shitty aftereffects. honestly just a very useful book that's worth your time imo since most of us are living with some sort of big heaviness.

cons of this book: trips the line into voyeuristic trauma-porn a little too often. i was okay but can see how some of what van der kolk describes (and the way he describes it) could be more triggering than helpful. a narrow viewpoint (just one white dude wrote this book, albeit one who was aided by many healers, trauma specialists and researchers) leaves the book unfriendly (at times) to sex workers, queers, and people harmed by the prison-industrial complex, which is frustrating to me given that these folks are some of those most affected by trauma!!!!!! nothing intentionally fucked up or harmful(?), but read mindfully and keep an eye out for the things that van der kolk missed the nuance on.

i do recommend this book even with its flaws. worth a read and super helpful to me. i love u bessel xo.
