I’ll start by saying you really should check trigger warnings going into this book if you have any. This story follows Drake and Evelyn, Drake is extremely manipulative and that doesn’t change through out, if you’re looking for a possessive, controlling, alphahole who isn’t sorry in the slightest and will play any mind games to get what he wants, This is definitely the book for you! I loved Evelyn and felt for her at times throughout the book. This book is extremely well writing and look forward to reading more by this author
What!
What did I just read?! I'm seriously dumbfounded right now. First of all, the prologue was horrible and the epilogue was worse. I feel so bad for Evelyn and understood her actions throughout the book. Drake is by far the worst hero I have ever read. I can't even call him a hero because he wasn't. He did horrible things to Evelyn throughout the book. He has no redeeming qualities and the 5 pages where he was kind was all a rouse. He even admitted that in the epilogue. Ugh.

*** Book Q & A***
* How did the book make you feel?: I am not a fan of this book.
* How do you feel about how the story was told?: It’s told from the h’s POV and the weird time jumps were disorienting. It begins with a rape scene in the future (confusing af), then jumps around from present day to when the h is 12, 14, 16 seemingly randomly. Chronological order would’ve made more sense, or just summarize the flashbacks rather than telling them in present tense. It didn’t work for me because it was boring and made the story seem stilted. Other than that, the pacing was okay. I also found some typos.
* What did you think about the main characters?: Evelyn, the h gave me whiplash. She wants to escape and then she doesn’t, she’s irrational and trying to have a ONS with a stranger, then she’s throwing herself at Drake, the H demanding he take her right then. She was so immature and impulsive. The H was not redeemable at all, IMO. He forced marriage and pregnancy on the h and never actually cared about her free will, as is disclosed in the epilogue. He switched out her bc pills for placebos with no regard for how hard pregnancy is on a woman physically and emotionally. At one point the h is reeling from being kidnapped and raped and then in the next breath she’s horny for the H. Wouldn’t a person need some time to process and recover from that trauma? I found them both to be gross and off-putting.
* Which parts of the book stood out to you?: Honestly, how annoyed I was by the h. She was so impulsive. I laughed when I read that she becomes a psychologist who’s an oblivious victim of her husband’s machinations because he’s probably a sociopath.
* What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: forced marriage, bride is property, sold by parents
* What did you think about the ending?: I wouldn’t consider it a HEA because the H reveals his true colors and it’s disgusting. Women still die in childbirth and he’s happily forcing back-to-back pregnancies on her.
* What is your impression of the author?: There’s talent, but I was not a fan of this book at all.

Triggers: forced marriage, sex trafficking, rape, cheating, forced pregnancy, psychological manipulation

Thank you Tiktok
Tiktok made me read it and omg I’m glad I took the plunge. This is my first book by Jaimie but I’ve added more of her books to my tbr list. As much as wanted to hate Drake for being a selfish manipulative alphahole I just couldn’t I needed more and more of him. The things he did to Evelyn can’t be forgiven but when he tells his story what his father did to him it’s no wonder he turns out the way he did.

A dark read
I really enjoyed this book although it was dark controlling and sad the way this girl felt she had no choice in life but even through it all she knew she loved him whether that be right or wrong she did if you like dark reads its a good one

I like dark romances but this one didn't do it for me. I didn't like the back and forth in the main heroine thinking, it was irritating. The main hero didn't do much for me either, especially when he r*ped her repeatedly and then told her, that he warned her and that it is her fault. The writing even though not the best and with some mistakes in made me turn the pages pretty quickly so I will go and pick another book by the author.
