I read this quickly, and I'm not sure if that helped or hindered. The book is fun, with likeable characters. The plot itself is a bit of a mess, which I discovered was maybe the fault of my particular downloaded version. About halfway through, I got confused about the timeline (just how long has Max been working at St. Mary's?) and downloaded my library's other version of the book and went back to some of the confusing bits to discover some sentences that were not included in my original version that signalled the passing of years. I didn't go back and reread the whole thing, but I can only assume that a later version of the book was released with better (or different) editing. If you have a choice of ebooks folks, go with the red cover.
Ultimately, I think it's entertaining enough, for a madcap romp through history (I like history, so that's an additional draw), and I might continue with the series simply because the goodreads scores seem to climb after this first book.

I don't give out 5 stars often. This was probably only the 2nd or 3rd book this year that made me stay up late reading.

This book was good, then bad, then good, then ??? Everything about it should have made it a good read--historians traveling back in time to do good things. Done well, it can be so much fun. However, this book veered all over the road. The author even admits that she tried a broad grab bag of plot devices in writing the book--bodice-ripper, mystery, thriller, comedy, and so on. Unfortunately, what failed to happen was a bond with the main character, Max. This story is like a poor cousin of Fforde's Thursday Next novels, which I do love. The plot involves Max getting a job as a time traveling historian through her old school in England. She risks life and limb visiting and studying dinosaurs, gets fired from her job, falls in love and has rather gratuitous sex with a mystery man at the school, lots of people die gruesomely, she figures out a plan to save historical artifacts destroyed in their timeline, and lots more people get killed. Of course, her plan is a marvelous success, but there is a great deal of foreshadowing that leads into subsequent books.
