P.S. Even better on audio the second time.
Delightful time traveling humor with some romance thrown in. More, please.

I’m probably going to give the second one a try because I’m a sucker for the concept, but every criticism of this novel in other reviews is warranted. It may be unfair to judge it based on Connie Willis, but when so much seems directly “inspired” by her world it’s impossible not to. Characterization is nonexistent, plot is loose instead of intentional, and the villain seems like a CW character. 2.5 stars here rounded down because of some grating tendencies (like the repeated foreshadowing) and questionable content.
Where to start? There is so much to say about this book, so many great things!
This story is one of the best I have read in a long while. Everything about it makes it a superb novel. The characters are incredibly well written, Max is superb in all her strange quirkiness. The foreshadowing found in it gives it just the right touch of trepidation, and sometimes dread, at what is coming. The action is engaging and makes one really want to know what happens next. The historical facts combined with the time-travel, and the tiny bit of mythic, so very well rendered. Yes, there is sometimes the odd paradox (TB2! Oh my Goddess!) but it's not too far out there to actually give one a headache trying to understand it. (Think Doctor Who but with lots of tea and slightly less chaotic commotions). And the little scattering of humor here and there gave a much needed lightheartedness in sometimes very dreary scenarios.
Much is not explained, some aspects barely brushed upon with a bit of hints of what is to come. A bit of a cliffhanger but not enough to have me foam at the mouth (yes, I'm not big on cliffhangers. Hate them with a passion).
Certainly, a novel I would recommend even to those who are not much into this sort of genre.

Enjoyable, but some of the plot holes and the sloppy writing really detracted. Connie Willis' "The Doomsday Book" has a very similar plot, but is much, much better.
gets a little confusingly overwhelming at times but So Good!
Jocelyne recommended this to me, and I'm so glad that I finally read it - it was exactly what I needed. A total romp.
