*I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.* 3.5 stars

It was a really fun book. I found it so funny; I laughed through most of it. The narrative voice is so snarky, and it reminded me of Daniel O'Malley's "Rook," which I also really liked.

There were just a few things that brought it down from a 4 to a 3.5. First, the author constantly foreshadows, which drove me a little nuts. For example, I knew one of the characters was going to turn out to be bad way before you actually found this out. I like to be surprised with this kind of thing, not know ahead of time.

I also got confused sometimes. I felt like the author would say something and I wasn't sure where it was going and then I wouldn't ever figure it out. One example is at the end of the book when they find the Shakespeare play. I couldn't figure out if it was Macbeth and so hadn't been lost and that's why it was wrong or if something else had happened. I was just thoroughly confused. I was also confused by the trip to Alexandria and the run in with Ronan. I couldn't figure out if that was a plan and if it had gone wrong or not. I just had to give up trying to figure it out after re-reading the section a few times and still not figuring it out.

But the plot is unique, the characters are super fun and I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

So. Much. FUN! Time travel, adventure, history and humor, with flavors of Connie Willis and TV’s Primeval (the original series, anyway, not that reboot abomination). I cannot wait to read more!

DNF at 50% because I got tired of waiting for some semblance of a plot to emerge from the generic assemblage of characters and concepts. Not my taste at all.

radio play version wasn't fun

*3.5

Really cool premise about historians that travel through time to study history better.

I picked up this book a few months ago because of the glowing reviews, but lost interests after chapter eight. Eventually I flipped through the rest of the book.

This is an adult version of Young Adult genre fiction, if that makes sense. A story set in a boarding school for grownups, disguised as time travel fantasy, mixed with military type of fighting and scheming, and of course, romance and sex.

It is fun but too predictable. On the other hand, more tech details would have made it more appealing, but that is only me.
