2018 review:

reread because i need to finally read the rest of the series, which has been on my shelf for forever

[i will NEVER forgive this book for 1) killing off cal, 2) bringing back cal, and then 3) killing cal at the end of the book anyway. did they really have to do all of that to me? (hide spoiler)]

This series is sooo good.  I love imagining the world below.

lanjutan tunnels yang cukup... yah, cukup.

I'm done. I'm finally done with this book, God bless, and I'm not gonna continue this series.

I read the first book many years ago in middle school, and I quite enjoyed it. Picking up the second book as a uni student made me realize how much the writing style bothered me, especially at the beginning. I enjoyed chapters written from Sarah's point of view, but the chapters surrounding Will and his friends felt incredibly slow-paced. There were many unnecessary scenes that could've just been told in a paragraph, while there were many paragraphs of "here's what happened" that could've been elaborated into proper scenes. It's as if the authors got their "show not tell" mixed up. Weirdly enough I didn't experience this problem reading from Sarah's, or Mrs. Burrow's point of view.

The characters felt rather flat and I couldn't sympathize with any of them, ESPECIALLY after the not-so-great attempt at the more emotional scenes. Character deaths would usually BREAK me, but here I just clicked my tongue, blamed Will AGAIN, (because it's pretty clear most events happening in this book was his fault and he acted so obnoxiously about it). and moved on.

The plot twist at the end, while I didn't expect it, didn't blow me away either. Maybe if I had known Rebecca's character better instead of seeing her as this one-dimensional "big bad", I would've felt... something, anything. The ending was intriguing, but I know for sure that I'm not going to sit through another book in this series. Quite a shame because the plot itself is interesting.

Captivating sequel to Tunnels. Will, Chester, and Cal meet some renegades in the Deep. Sarah Jerome, Will and Cal's biological mother, finds herself back underground looking for her boys. The Styx are planning a way to kill the Topsoilers so they can move to the surface. All the characters from Tunnels, including Mrs. Burrows, are in this book, which is a nice touch.

Can't wait for the next book.

This is a fabulous series for boys, but this is the point I think at where it lost me... The first in the series (Tunnels) I thought was far superior.

The plot thickens as this fantastically unique and captivating series continues
