The magic system in this world is so fun! I don’t like the main characters, so I’m hoping they become more likable in the second book. They’re both incredibly stuck-up. I do wish the author had the reader organically discover things about the world instead of having Osric explain things out of nowhere as if he, himself were just learning them for the first time - that really took me out of the story.
I also don’t feel like there was any convincing reason for the characters to begin having feelings for each other… it felt really forced
Because of the things listed above, I give this 3.75/5 stars. If the characters were likable (which I feel like was the intention, it just wasn’t executed well) and the world-building was more natural OR if there were even a modicum of character-building that matched what happened toward the end, I think that would’ve bumped this to at least a 4.5 for me.
Spice I’m giving a 2/5 🌶️ because it was incredibly minimal, but it was open-door. Though, I don’t really consider explicit masturbation to be “open-door” in the typical sense, my 1 🌶️ rating is reserved exclusively for closed-door and fade-to-black.
I listened to the audiobook and I’m really hoping the editors do a better job of reviewing and piecing together the correct takes of the narrators. There was more than one instance of the narrator making multiple attempts to say a line with different inflections on the words - and it was all left in this final product. I won’t take stars away from the book for this because it’s a problem with the audio-editor, not the author.
