A bit of a mixed-review from me.

Things I liked:
-Very interesting premise, I especially liked how
The main character becomes more and more obsessed with Ewers and magic.

-The setting: I really like the idea of exploring the Mexican film scene in the 90s.

Things I didn't like:
-Some of the dialogue felt forced and unnatural.
-The pacing felt a bit strange, slowed down a lot in the middle and the end felt a bit rushed.
-I would have liked more exploration into
the ways that studying magic and Ewers really made Montserrat become enmeshed.

-
The climax. I felt that the climax had no tension. At no point did I feel that Montserrat was going to accept Ewers' ideas/ join him. I think this leads into another thing I didn't enjoy about the novel: I think that tension wasn't really built in a meaningful way.

Overall, this isn't a bad read, but I would have liked more from this book.

I think Moreno-Garcia has similar taste to me. This is a thriller/mystery centered on old movies, the weird Golden age hollywood (Mexican hollywood?) culture, the occult, and has characters trying to be smart and do the right thing. All things I love, so of course this was a great read for me.
