The Gods of Men

This was an absolute joy to read. An interesting premise with protagonists you can't help cheering on. I can't wait to read the entire series though I don't want it to end.

This was so good. Holy crap, I had to hold my tears back because I was reading it in public. Jos and Sable are such amazing characters. The strength Sable has I felt in my soul. I am in awe.

No. This book does the utter most when it comes to trying to sell the world to you through throwing in made up fantasy words. I dislike books that overdo it so much that you basically need a dictionary to understand what the fuck the characters are talking about. One of my big pet peeves. Do this gradually, ease me in, pull me in. Don't drag me by the hair.
Another thing is how desperately the book is trying to sell us on the protagonist being a saintly little angel.

Sorry, but this isn't my thing. Too YA. Next.

FR :

ENG :

I started reading Gods of Men without really knowing what to expect. I wasn't expecting much because it was one of those books I wanted to read but didn't have a burning desire to get into. If I hadn't read it in LC, it would probably have been sitting on my bookshelf for several more months.

I really liked the universe created by the author, we have a mix between a fictional world and a nod to the history of the world we know. I also like the fact that there are many different landscapes in the same universe. The political/religious plot was very well done, not too heavy and I really liked it!
The author's writing was very fluid and several passages touched me which for me, means that the writing touched me.

One thing I really liked was the emotions that the characters stirred up in me, I loved characters and then hated them to the core. Any suspicions I had about the ending were 5% of the actual plot and I was looooong to imagine everything that happened.

The main characters are, in my opinion, quite well constructed and very interesting, the reactions are realistic, true and we can identify quite easily.

The only downside is that the music is described as central in the summary and does not become so until very late in the book...

I believe this book was a finalist in the 2018 SPFBO's and it well deserves it's place. It hit all the right notes for me; a healer protagonist, interesting magic including necromancy (one of my personal favourites). There is also a romatic sub plot between our two M.C's and I really liked their chemistry together.

When Sable was a child, she discovered she had magic when she accidentally stops her baby sister's heart. She flees in horror at what she has done and ends up in The Wilds where she becomes a Healer. Jos is a Prince, sent by his brother to retrieve Sable to save his father. They both have their secrets so it was interesting watching them form a bond and waiting for the truth to come to light for both of them.

The characters felt fully fleshed out and nuanced and I found myself fully invested in them. Their struggles felt consistent and realistic in the context of the story. Sable is clever and resourceful and I really liked her. Jos is a great contrast to her as a warrior who fully believes in what he is doing in defense of his people's beliefs and country.

Kloss isn't afraid to put the characters through some dark moments and I really felt for them during these events. For me; this was the perfect blend of fantasy, adventure and a little bit of romance. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes me in the sequels.
