"Looking for love is not one of the standard entries on the résumé. You see, you have been writing a journal for the past ten years, and everyone else has been composing a résumé. Don't think you will be forgiven that," he said. "After all, the Empire State Building is nothing but a mass of sublimated love."

I didn’t think I would like this much when I started it, but I really enjoyed it by the end. It was just such a contrast to 70s lesbian novels I’ve read that it was a surprise! It was somehow relatable although it was describing the circuit scene in New York 50 years ago.

It made me reflect on being in my late 20s and figuring out what’s important in my life and what to prioritize and how to structure my life etc. It encouraged me to look beyond what everyone else is doing and what seems romantic and aesthetic and to seek out what makes me feel fulfilled.

I really liked that the book began and ended with letters and the story itself was supposed to be a story written by one of the letter writers.

I also liked that the narrator was kept as a pretty vague character. It took me a second when I started the book to place who the characters were and that felt stylistically like a good choice and maybe a commentary on the characters lives. It was written so familiarly and without formal introductions to characters.

Beautiful!

I think the book is beautifully written and captures a particular moment in time quite well. There are of course some problematic parts of the book that use unsavory language to refer to groups or individuals, but that is something that itself requires analysis. The book can feel a bit dark and hopeless at times, professing the futility of life and pleasures that one may have once enjoyed. It really spoke to me in a way that no other story ever has and can drag you into the depths if you’re not careful.
