This book is great. The characters are great and it's emotionally compelling. I haven't read too many books based in Canada, so it was also interesting to explore this new setting.

My only complaint is that I had no idea that this was a part of a series, and now I'm going to probably spend the rest of my summer tracking down the first 11 parts of the series. So much for my reading plans.

One of my favorites of the series so far

An overly-optimistic Gamache takes his anti-corruption crusade to the police academy, and the residents of Three Pines learn some local history while studying the stained glass in the church.

4.5 stars. One of my favorites of the series. Love the multi-layered plot.

One of my favorites in the series so far. My only beef is Beauvoir always believing the worst about Gamache. Gamache trusts him enough to support him marrying his daughter after only a couple of months in recovery from a drug addiction so serious it almost got Gamache killed, but let Gamache look intensely at a cadet and Beauvoir goes straight to “Is he sleeping with his cadet?” Very annoying.

It took me a long time to like these characters and feel at all attached. The book itself was fine, but wasn't super interesting to me until the last few chapters when you get twists and turns and drama.
