The Mighty Red is a joyful, wry, and tangled web. I appreciated the cast of characters and the sheer amount of story going on, but at points, I felt some plot lines were too developed while others were abandoned too early. The characters are the heart and soul, especially Crystal and Kismet, and I really enjoyed the points around environmentalism and farming. I would have appreciated this more if it had a more central plot that connected the other subplots. While some parts of the book were lost to the chaos, I liked its convoluted nature.

Little pieces of this book reminded me of growing up - mainly having classmates married right out of high school. There wasn’t anything especially profound - but the daily challenges faced as well as holding guilt for past wrongs really stood out in an ordinary way that was captivating. “And the times were pleasant but also desperate, and this was the world.”
