This is intended for 5th to 8th graders and I can picture myself at this age with a dictionary looking up different words used that I had never before and it’s a nice image. Some of the words and idea in here are outdated but still a great listen and not a surprise at all that it was a Newbery award winner in 1967. Still hate the cover but glad I picked it up!

This book came highly recommended but I think I came to it too late in my life. It was really charming and had a great pace, I just wish I had read it well before I was 27.

1967 Newbery Medal Winner

This book was not for me. The setting is vague and poorly defined, the plot is wandering and murky... The characters are well fleshed out and believable, but the tone and pace of the novel left me not caring much at all about any of them.

I think what really makes this book fall flat for me is how much it tries to cover in so few pages. The story follows a young girl from the death of her month when she is quite young (nine?) until her high school graduation. And I mean that literally; the book abruptly ends after her graduation ceremony.

The novel deals with issues including but not limited to the loss of a parent, moving, making friends, social and financial inequality, bullying, poverty, death of a clasamate/peer, changing sibling relationships, alcoholism, heartbreak, the importance of education, mental illness/dementia, dealing with step parents, plagiarism/cheating, emotionally manipulative boyfriends, out of wedlock pregnancy, love, self discovery...

It does none of the above well, in just opinion.

Sweet coming of age story with nods at L.M. Montgomery's style.

4.5 stars (I may round up in my goodreads rating later . . . Why don't they allow for half-stars on here??). I'm a sucker for a good coming of age story and this is the best one I've read in a while. It reminded me of [a:L.M. Montgomery|5350|L.M. Montgomery|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1188896723p2/5350.jpg]'s writing, which is definitely a good thing in my book. I loved Julie's character and watching her mature. I wasn't excited to read this one, but I'm glad I finally got around to it and discovered a new favorite.

I went on a Newbery Award book kick and just loved this one. It's written so well, and makes a perfect transition from sad child to wise young woman.

Not a favorite. It is difficult to like the main character. It was an Anne of Green Gables type of plot, but again, the main character was not nearly as enjoyable so I didn't like it as much. I also did not like some beliefs that it taught like the idea that a woman is not fully developed until she has loved a man. Hmph.
