A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash

Cash's writing is so reminiscent of John Hart's work, that I easily found myself absorbed in the storyline from the first page. The detail is magnificent, and I was transported to this tiny mountain town that was the setting for the calamity waiting to unfold. How does one meld tragedy with such beauty? I don't know the formula, but Cash has it mastered. Excellent read. 4.5⭐

I'm not sure where I heard of this book or why I picked it up, but it was pretty good. An easy quick read with a good story, decent characters and a nice message.

Wiley Cash is the kind of storyteller I want to be. This novel was powerful, realistic, and an accurate portrayal of the complexities of human nature. The author strikes a balance between the reality of bleak circumstances and hope for an eventual redemptive outcome that stretches beyond the final pages.

Another disappointing book I had read good reviews about. HATED the unnecessarily violent and sad ending.

"I hope it doesn’t seem that I am damning this book with faint praise by giving it three out of five stars. It is a solid, well-written debut, one that makes me eager to read Cash’s latest, This Dark Road to Mercy. I’m giving it three stars primarily because the story is not wholly original, and neither are the characters. The author has some characters make interesting choices at the end, but that doesn’t make the book ground-breaking in any way. That said, this novel is definitely worth reading, and Cash will be a writer to watch."

I didn't hate this book, but I was really underwhelmed by it. The author seemed to be taking his time and created a really interesting set if characters and a combustible situation... But the exciting parts were over too quickly and the character building dragged on for me. It was ok.

I tried 3 times to get into this book, but I'm not going to try again. I'm disappointed,in really thought this would be good judging from the reviews :(. Time is too short for mediocre books, so I'm moving on

Small southern town. Snake handling preacher. Dead child.

The book tells the story from the POV of the town sheriff, the little brother of the dead boy, and an elderly woman who is part of the preacher's congregation. Dark, sad, compelling.

This was an incredibly well written but heartbreaking story. The audiobook was also very well done. I didn't give it more stars because it's not really a book that you whole heartedly recommend based in its depressing plot.
