Thanks to #netgalley and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for the ARC. It seems a little too timely to finish this so close to the inauguration of a president who inspired the events in this book. However, Samira Ahmed took me in, wrapped me up in this story, these characters, and shook me.

I think at times I get complacent living in a blue state, even though I'm in a less-purple, more-red section of it. As a teacher, I've had challenges to my classroom materials, but I've never been put on leave for them. I have students who protest things, but they've never been assaulted by molotov cocktails.

This Book is, in short, AMAZING. I can't wait to share it with my students.

I have never not been inspired by a book by Samira Ahmed. Never. And this title is no exception. While it took a little longer for me to get rolling through this book, it absolutely made it worth the struggle! My gawd - the fact that there are actually kids experiencing this type of vitriol and violence? That so-called, self-proclaimed patriots would deny a child the right to see themselves in a book? The fragility of their privileged egos? Itโ€™s staggering. This book is important and should be required reading for every school board member rather than the drivel being peddled by book banners. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ“š

The story is initially set in Chicago where Noor and her family seem to have a happy life. That is until her father leaves one morning and never comes back. Her mother then uproots the family and they move to a very small, very white, midwestern town. In her new school Noor is confronted with the removal of books from the library and the atmosphere is not one that appreciates her โ€˜I Read Banned Booksโ€™, t-shirt.

I loved the connection between Noor and her sister Amal, the little bit of romance with Andrew and Faiz, the great group of new friends that support her and the many books that are mentioned through the story.

I think this could be a very interesting text to use with a book banning unit. I am not sure if it has been banned yet, but I suspect it wonโ€™t take long. There is lots to talk about in this one.
