Prompt: Book that Inspires You

I just had to start book two in the series. The previous one inspired me. This book felt more personal since the wisdom was coming from the big sister, but everything was still painfully and beautifully relatable.

I have devoured each of Amanda Lovelace's poetry collection and this one continues to impress. Lovelace tells a compelling story in verse throughout the book and this one is especially poignant since it's about sisters and the bond between them.

You don't have to have read any of the previous collections to get something from this collection, and her prose is the perfect introduction to beginners finding their way into poetry. Not because her poems are simple but because they are true and honest that anyone can relate to.

Shine Your Icy Crown is the second collection in the You Are Your Own Fairy Tale. An inspirational collection of poems letting us know that women are their own people and do not need to be pigeonholed by those around them. As with all of Lovelace's other poetry collections, I really enjoyed this.

yes yes yes. i loved this!

“Make them rue the day they underestimated you.”

This is a story about not letting society dictate the limits of your potential. it’s time to take back your power & realize that you don’t need a king in order to be a queen.

...

I loved this. Lovelace has written a collection of poetry and prose that is beautiful, haunting, uplifting and fearless. It discusses some heavy topics (and comes with a full list of trigger warnings: amazing!) in a way that is both supportive and badass, supported with whimsical illustrations. I also really loved the way that most of the collection was written as dialogue between sisters. If you're looking for a collection of poetry that is encouraging and supportive, uplifting and hopeful - this is the one for you. I can't wait for it to be released so I can buy a physical copy.

Amanda Lovelace continues to inspire with the newest of her poetry collections. I don't think there will ever be a book from her that I won't enjoy.

"be as courageous
as I know you can be.

fight on.
fight on, wolf-heart."

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Even if you’re not that into poetry, you’ve probably heard of Amanda Lovelace’s ‘The Witch Doesn’t Burn in This One’.

I liked that book, so I thought I’d probably like Shine Your Icy Crown. I was wrong. The above is the one poem I actually liked.

Granted, the idea of this book is good. It has beautiful illustrations, I love the fact that the title of the poem comes at the end - complementing the piece itself and part I of the book seemed promising with the juxtaposition of sisterly advice in ‘big sister says’ and reflection on terrible family moments.

What I don’t like, however, far outweighs what I do like.

The princess/royalty metaphor one expects from the title is dropped as soon as it can be, and even if the poems seem to be a narrative - there is very little connecting them. This book felt like 120+ pages of telling, not showing. It was a book of advice, rather than a book of poetry, in my opinion.

It promises to be a book of empowering poetry, instead, it ended up being a book of repetitive and seemingly lost discourse.

Also (and this is something that drives me insane), the few quotable content seems to be in the book for no other reason than to be quoted by teenage girls. There, I said it.
