I've read other books of poetry by Amanda Lovelace and really liked them. Shine Your Icy Crown was no different. This is apparently part of a series, but I listened to this one before the first in the series, Break Your Glass Slippers.
This book really focused on the relationship of sisters, but I feel like you don't need to have a sister to really connect with these poems. Especially if you have people in your life you'd consider a sister or even just a best friend.
This was a quick listen and gets pretty deep considering it's so short. Be sure to check trigger warnings before deciding to read Shine Your Icy Crown.

Thoughts:
• I think Amanda Lovelace is officially my favorite poet
• the overall themes of female relationships & empowerment are so well executed & powerful
• as the eldest child, the “big sister says…” selections really hit home in the best way
• I love the way these poems have basis in traditional fairytale stories & ideals, but ultimately use those ideals to support the opposite narrative we typically associate with those traditional fairytales
• such empowering messages - every woman should read this, honestly
For folks who like/are interested in:
• poetry
• feminism
• mental health
• fairytales
• healing/emotional
⚠️ Content Warnings:
• disordered eating
• mental illness
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for a review.
First, this book does have some heavy topics so approach it with care. It touches on topics such as self harm, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, and more.
I really enjoyed the second installment in this three book poetry collection. The second book touched on similar themes as the first one. However, this one focused less on toxic relationships and more on the relationship with self. This collection also dives into what it really means to be a feminist. The way Amanda described it really hit home for me. I would definitely recommend this collection.
