holy shit. this book needs to be read twice over (at least!) to truly appreciate its greatness.

I think this is my favorite poetry collection I've ever read. I'm already reading it again. Absolutely amazing.

The poems in this collection operate in a visceral level. The body is at the Center here, and the author evokes such cutting imagery! There are lines in some of these poems that will gut you. However, for me, I didn’t get much of these poems. I like his descriptions of place, but the poems were interrupted by me having to look up several words. The poems also began to feel like they were just too much of the same over and over again, for me. Perhaps I just did not understand this text. This was not the collection for me.

In both text and audio, this just didn't do it for me.

It's so hard to rate poetry, so I just am not going to. This was a difficult read--the first time in awhile I've really struggled to really grasp the meaning of what I'm reading. I liked that! I think I would benefit from hearing these poems, too. But I loved the feel of the words, the darkness, the many, many allusions that went over my head. There are so many layers here. I want to study this.

I need to read this again, and slowly. It's so full of life I couldn't quite grasp it all. Required 2nd and 3rd reading with this book

Unsurprisingly, another poet whose second collection I am picking up first, and now want to read their first. This is a darkly beautiful collection weaving together the Black experience and horror films, and eventually using the poems themselves to summon a retaliatory Black spirit to exact their revenge. Amazing as a concept collection, and just A++ as individual poems. Coffee House Press will rarely steer you wrong.
