I have to say first that I really enjoyed this trilogy so far.
All books were fast paced and very engaging.

Looking forward to the third and final book.
Darkling is on the move and so is Alina.

The only reason I finished this book was because of Nikolai. I also gave this book three stars because I love Nikolai that much. The majority of this book I found uninteresting, though I have to say I liked it better than the first. It didn't pick up until the final thirty pages or so and honestly, I think this book put me in a temporary reading slump.

Now don't mind my spoilery gush/rant about what needs to happen in the next book.

WHO NEEDS TO DIE: ALINA AND MAL. PLEASE. DIE. THANK YOU.

BUT NIKOLAI. I LOVE HIM TOO MUCH. I HOPE THAT HE CAN MAKE PEACE WITH EVERYONE AND HIS FATHER WONT LIVE MUCH LONGER SO ALL HAIL KING NIKOLAI!!!!

Then we have the problem child, the darkling. What do we do with him? I guess he can live. Maybe Nikolai can keep him as a pet? But he doesn't have to die... maybe.

JUST, A LOT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN THE FINAL BOOK. MOST IMPORTANTLY ALINA NEEDS TO DIE AND NIKOLAI NEEDS TO BECOME KING.

DON'T COME FOR ME ALL YOU ALINA FANS PREECHING "SANKTA ALINA" NO! NOOOOOOOO!!! SHE CAN BE A MARTYR. I'M GOOD WITH THAT COMPROMISE. I MEAN THAT GIRL HAS GOT TO GET HER LIFE TOGETHER.

I should stop. Really. So I guess I'll just have to see how the final book goes.

I enjoyed this book more than the first! It’s more what I was hoping for and expecting when I started this series.

I love all the new character additions, especially Nikolai. He’s probably my favorite now.

However. The reason I can’t give the book a higher rating is named Mal. I went from being indifferent about him to downright despising him.

He’s toxic in a subtle, realistic way: A boyfriend who can’t handle his girlfriend’s success.
Alina is literally trying to save the world from evil shadow monsters, yet all he can do is whine about how his job isn’t important enough and say he liked her better when she was “common.” 🤮 I hope he dies in some sort of heroic way and Alina ends up with Nikolai.

ANYWAY. Overall, this book hit the mark for me more than the first. I’m definitely excited to read the conclusion now.

I will say that this book was better than the first in the trilogy (Shadow and Bone), but I just felt Siege and Storm was ... kind of disappointing. I hate the miscommunication trope that seems to be violently prevalent in this book, what with Mal and Alina constantly mad at the other for some false reason that they created in their heads. I'm normally always the type to root for the childhood friend rather than the tall, dark, handsome new man but, like... Mal has become pretty unlikeable! I find myself wishing that Mal either comes to his senses and talk to Alina, so they can move past their many communication mishaps, but the other part of me is kind of wanting Nikolai and Alina to see that they might have a connection.
Also, the political and societal development in this book was quite complex and well-thought-out, but I still felt kind of bored at parts. It just felt like 30% of this book was back and forth with the occasional world building, witty one-liner, or a smidgen of romance. Safe to say that isn't my type of book. The final battle felt a little anticlimactic, and it's starting to feel like Alina is becoming a disappointing MC. Something about her just really irks me... I'm not sure though. Hopefully the character and story flaws get wrapped up in the final book of the trilogy, because I am set on finishing the series even though this second book has dragged.

I really enjoyed continuing on the Shadow and Bone storyline, I loved the addition of the new characters, especially Nicolai who is so perfectly written. This second book is tense, exciting and irritating! Alina and Mal were slightly driving me insane! Despite that I really enjoyed the book, it feels a lot more dark and gritty than the first book and the characters a lot more complex. I can't wait to finish the trilogy and start book 3.
