Wow, what a beautiful, wonderful book. The story, and each story within the story, was masterfully told. Eng engaged me emotionally in Teoh's life, as I worried about her health and I loved and hated right alongside her as she dealt with her conflicted feelings about Japan and its people. Enigmatic Aritomo was a fascinating character with whom I would have loved to spend a day or maybe a year in complete fascination. Even the more minor characters were amazing personalities that added so much depth to this story. Absolutely one of my best reading experiences in a long time.

It took me a bit to get into this book, but in the end I did enjoy it. It was different than anything I’ve read before. It was interesting to learn more about WWII in Asia and also how the story went from the past to the present and how everything was connected. I did find it confusing at times though to follow the time changes. Definitely a book that makes you think. (Read for Condo Book Club)
