I listened to the audiobook. It was an interesting listen, but I found it hard to follow in the beginning. The ending wrapped up too neatly.
It took me a bit to get settled into The Angel Maker, but this isn’t uncommon with Alex North’s stories. We follow several threads that all lead us to the truth and a suspenseful ending.
The threads are delivered from the main characters who are Kate Shaw, mother, wife & sister of Chris Shaw, Chris Shaw a tormented young man, Detective Lawrence Page who is trying to solve a murder and stumbles into something more, Edward Leland, and Alan Hobbs, a professor.
This was a dark thriller with lots of twists and it all begins with a chilling prologue that sets the tone of the story. We have a dual timeline. We traverse from present day to events in 1956. At times, the storyline was very dark, especially as things wove together.
Detective Page is investigating the murder of an old man. Kate is looking for Chris and trying to keep her child safe from a man who appears to be stalking them, but there is so much more at play. This is the type of story that I am sure I will pick up on things a second time through. It was clever as North’s books tend to be and you need to follow along carefully or you’ll miss something.
Fans of suspenseful dark thrillers that skirt horror will find North’s book captivating. Rosalie Craig, a new to me narrator, did a splendid job with these characters all delivered in 3rd person point of view. She did a fine job with the male voices and captured the tone perfectly. I would recommend taking notes as it’s a lot of wibbly wobbly timey wimey confusion until the end. One incident seems left unresolved although it’s not integral to the overall point, I guess.
Not entirely sure where to start! This is a really twisted web of a tale with good versus evil, nature versus nurture some deep philosophy and a dash of magic.
There is some really good food for thought about what path you can find your life taking and what influences, if any, your parents and people around you can have. I found it a little tricky to keep track of how all of the various characters interlinked but feel fairly satisfied with my overall understanding although at times it felt ever so slightly out of reach and I had to stretch to grasp the truths.
I loved the sense of inherent darkness present in the story and the mysterious qualities, I also really warmed to the main characters and felt I was on the journey with them. Definitely a recommend from me, although I’ve come out the other side a little dazed and confused like I’ve been doing brain gymnastics.

Nonlinear narratives don’t always work, especially when the author is relying on it to do all of the suspense work. Just fell flat and ended up confusing

This review is incredibly hard to write because I really don’t know what to say or maybe how to articulate my thoughts. I rated the first two books of his, five stars so I really expected to love this book and I felt really disappointed. I think this one was lacking in many ways I think that he is a brilliant writer. he is definitely very talented but this book to me felt like having a bunch of puzzle pieces that either you can’t see what’s on the puzzle piece or you’re just in a pitch black room trying to fit these pieces together and it’s just almost impossible. you have a lot of suspense and mystery but it’s really hard to piece it together and it really frustrated me because I wanted to be able to puzzle it together as I’m reading and I just felt kind of in the dark the entire time.
I just felt like he tried very hard for it to be so mysterious that it left you more in the dark than necessary. I think it was well written and well plotted just wasn’t a huge fan of the execution. You also have to suspend belief for this one. It’s heavy in philosophy so if you like that, this is for you.
I found it hard to keep up at times with multiple pov and timelines as well. Sometimes jumping in the middle of chapters. Not entirely hard to follow. Just hard to remember everything and keep up with constant time changes and characters. Characters who used more than one name, i would get confused on who was who. Just a bit convoluted. There’s just a lot going on that eventually comes together. Just maybe a bit too much going on. I also wanted more on the serial killer aspect.
With all of that said, i think it does make you want to keep turning the pages wanting to know what is going on here.
I feel like it’s easier to point out what i didn’t like than what i did. But i did mostly like this one. Every chapter end had a little cliff or hook that made you want to go into the next chapter.
Overall it’s a 3-3 1/2 star read for me. I’m going to round up tho.

High creep factor, but lessened because the parts of this story felt too disjointed even though the plan for them to come together was definitely a unique and good one. It felt fully like reading and trying to follow more than five separate stories
