“If you could see the future, would you want to?"
After reading The Whisper Man and The Shadows I was so excited to receive an ARC copy of North's much anticipated book The Angel Maker and moved it to the top of my TBR.
The story follows Professor Alan Hobbes death and how his brutal murder will impact the lives of three individuals who are linked to his journey. It's about Kate Shaw and her younger brother Chris and how a past incident shaped their future. Along with a serial killer who has a superpower. North has a way of writing spooky and creepy words and chill your bones and make your hair stand on ends. In all transparency this book seemed more of a whodunnit/ detective storyline.
While The Whisper Man remains my favorite of the three, this is still worth reading!
I loved the back and forth timelines because it helped build the character setting. With that being said you really have to pay attention while reading so you don't get confused.
Thank you @celadonbooks and @netgalley for the advanced
copy.

Author Alex North is new to me. Having just read "The Whisper Man", which I enjoyed immensely, I wanted to read more of his work. This book was just as good as "The Whisper Man", for me. Both books are full of suspense. They both are intricately woven stories that kept me guessing. The author writes good thrillers. That's all I can say.

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up
the coolest thing abt this book is that i, as the reader, literally am god (according to the central theory of determinism which shapes the plot of the whole story)
my only gripe is that the romantic relationships felt way forced in a way the platonic relationships did not. i didn’t need to be told katie loved her brother or that alan loved his son—i was shown all of that through the events of the book. i did need to be told (almost exclusively told btw like very rarely shown) that katie and her husband loved each other and that chris and his boyfriend loved each other. those relationships just felt flimsy

The third star is for suspense, I did enjoy how fast it moved. I wanted to know what was happening, but midway I realized everything would be perfectly wrapped up, not truly mysterious or tense. Time was confusing, too many “perfect” connections that were further conflated with religious beliefs. Too many moving parts that the actual mystery got overshadowed by too many people trying to hunt another one down.
