The Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements - hosted by lalu

Cu - Copper
What do you see when you think of copper? You probably picture a shiny, reddish metal. But let me tell you, copper has a lot of colours!
  • There are white, baby blue, ultramarine and kelly green coordination complexes
  • CuCl2 can be yellow-brownish or turquoise, depending on hydration
  • Copper(II) oxide is a black powder
  • an old name for Copper(II) sulphate is bluestone
  • I'm sure you've all seen copper roofs (often on churches) that have turned dark brown and later a characteristic green thanks to oxidation
  • but my favourite is the flame of copper salts in flame tests - it's a vibrant turquoise. I once heard a student call the flame of Copper(II) chloride "tropical colours" because you can see different blues and greens in the flame
