H - Hydrogen
The first element of the periodic table and the lightest, because it usually only consists of one proton and one electron. Add a neutron and you get an isotope called deuterium (D).
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and also one of the first - 379,000 years after the big bang, when the universe had cooled down a bit, nuclei and electrons started to combine into atoms and most of them where hydrogen.
Sounds all very spacey? Well actually hydrogen is all around and inside us. There's hydrogen in water, sugar, proteins, fats, plastic and in the air.
