These are the #ChallengeOurShelves2023 themes for January, not only because it is Self-Love month, but because I feel these will intersect with many other challenge themes throughout the year. ⁣

And yes, also because it is a month where so much emphasis is put on dieting and self-improvement. ⁣
⁣
I have no qualms with a New Year's Resolution to do something that makes you feel better but I think it is important to start from a place of loving and accepting your body and the rest of yourself just as it is - not from the mindset that you are not worthy enough just as you are. ⁣

A lot of the conversations surrounding these movements have been geared toward those who identify as women. However, these issues impact everyone. There are many layers and it is often even more complex for those identifying with historically marginalized groups. ⁣

Consider traditional beauty standards. What have those looked like? Who have they looked like? Consider how these standards have perpetuated light skin and straight hair as desirable. How does this impact the conversation?⁣
