A Lesson in Vengeance
by Victoria Lee
The premise of this novel sounded so interesting - I mean, lesbian dark academia with some lore about witches? Sign me up. Unfortunately, the story did not live up to the premise for me.
I found myself bored for so much of this novel, but too stubborn to stop reading it. The heavy detail and description attempted to be atmospheric but didn't pull me in, and it felt like there was barely anything going on. This novel focused on the main character Felicity's psyche and inner turmoil, but because so much of her real self was hidden in the deep depths of her mind, it meant I didn't really get to know her as a character, or feel engaged with the story.
There was barely any depth to the side characters at all, other than some basic poc rep. Literally one of the characters main purpose seems to be to educate Felicity about systemic racism in academia, and that wasn't even a major plot point. The only character I actually knew and liked was Ellis, because she was so passionate and strange and... fake, but it was easy for me to see through that persona she had on, which made her much more interesting than the other characters.
Truthfully, this wasn't an awful book but just had lackluster writing and shallow characters, but I enjoyed the ending enough to round this up to 2.75 stars
