Cold Storage by David Koepp

4.0

Cold Storage was pretty much exactly what I wanted from The Andromeda Strain when I read it. It had likable characters that you actually cared about when they were in danger, a massive sense of danger, and a satisfying payoff. It was similar in the sense that the story started out so quickly, slowed down a bit in the middle to set up the conflict in the last act, and then moved at a blistering pace towards the ending. But this ending was really interesting and satisfying, something I thought The Andromeda Strain lacked.

There was also a bit of ridiculousness in this one that I liked. The book has a deer riding an elevator at one point, which is not something I thought I’d ever type out. There are zany main characters, especially Teacake (not named for the character from Their Eyes Were Watching God in the story) who somehow takes this whole life or death situation in stride because of a girl he has a crush on (as you do friend, totally get you there). I do wish there was more Roberto in the middle of the book, because he was fantastic during the beginning of the book as well as in the last act. I particularly enjoyed his back and forth with Abigail, the government employee who was his overwatch throughout the whole situation.

Cold Storage was an enjoyable book, and one that you could totally blow through in an afternoon if you have the time. It was so easy to just pick up and get into the story.
