The fact I am living in Prague at the moment has certainly influenced how much I've enjoyed this book. The city is undoubtedly the main character and it was a blast to read through these vivid descriptions of an older, darker Prague. The tidbits of history mixed in with the fantastic elements made the book even more interesting and while I can't say whether it was historically accurate or not (the existence of vampires and spirits notwithstanding) I know it did use some Czech mythology to build its fantasy.
This is not a novel that makes you think, or that will leave you shattered from the depth of its characters. But it is a really entertaining read and for that it was well worth it. The characters are, for the most part, interesting (Lady Ora and Kája in particular), the scenes are fast-paced, the setting is absolutely gorgeous, and the mystery kept me gripped throughout. During the final 150 pages I just couldn't put it down and ended up reading it in one go until way too late in the morning.
I would recommend this book to anyone who's thinking of visiting Prague. Walking the city's cobblestones during the day and reading this book in the evening will really bring a little bit of extra something to both experiences, I think.
4 stars out of 5.
