This is definitely a coming of age story that will resonate with A LOT of folks. It's the narrative of lived girlhood that many of us have experienced. I found myself saying "yep" a lot throughout this read because so much of it was deeply relatable. I saw a lot of myself in the main character, Ren.
I grew up playing soccer. So much so that it became my entire life. Ren's character and her experiences not only as an athlete, but as someone who is trying to find their own identity and sexuality in high school was very in line with my own experiences. It's quite a heartbreaking story really. Girlhood is sacred, but girlhood is also scarring especially in an age when young women are so overly sexualized and objectified. It spoke a lot to the inability to feel safe from being a child to being an adult in this time and many instances of my body is not mine themes throughout. Very much an emotional read.
Song's prose is poetic and lyrical. She is a strong author that we need to keep our eye out for. I expect many more excellent novels from this Jade in our future!
