Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig

I'll just leave this quote as a testament to the moments I enjoy in this duology.

When Ravyn cast his eyes back into the courtyard, Otho was hurrying toward her sister. Hesis lay in the dirt, unmoving. Her mask was broken, shards of bone scattered around her. Blood trickled down her face.
"Nightmare," he said through his teeth.
The monster laughed as he slipped out of the fort. "She'll live. All I did was pay her back for breaking your nose."
"I didn't ask you to do that."
"No. But Elspeth did."

I think the second book in this duology was the perfect ending. It had everything I wanted- more time spent with the Nightmare, Ravyn's POV, Elm's POV, Elspeth's attachment to her monster, a secondary romance subplot, throne rivalry, a lot of action, and a nice HEA.

While I admit that the world-building could have been better, the plot was predictable, and there could have been more unexpected twists, I still enjoyed both books. It's a simple dark fantasy story that relies on well-known tropes that always bring enjoyment. I loved all the main characters, and it was great to see their different perspectives in this book. Despite any flaws, I know I will definitely reread it later to meet them all again.
