Definitely tried to subvert the colonizer/colonized romance thing, but I’m not sure it was entirely effective in making it okay. 

The pacing was kinda all over the place, sometimes taking forever for anything to happen, and then bam 5 things have happened and we’re 1000 miles away. This particularly happens with travel.

The magic system is really cool and I like how it develops throughout the book and gets added to.
