My review of this book is probably best summed up as 'mid.' I enjoyed it, but I could have enjoyed it more. I will do my best to explain without any spoilers. To start with the characters, specifically Felicity. I am not a fan of the paranoid narrator, which she definitely was. However, it felt justified and necessary to understand her trauma. My biggest issue with Felicity was her inconsistency. She swung from naive to dark, from terrified to confident. I also felt we were told who she was rather than shown. Of course, even with all that, I did like her, especially her love of books and darkness. As for the plot, I enjoyed it. I liked the dark nature of it, though it could have happened faster. I saw a lot of it coming, but still enjoyed the twists and turns. Lastly, the magic undertone, a major selling point of the book to me. It was truly an undertone, only occasionally appearing in the story, and I wish the author had leaned into it more. Overall, this was a good book that with only a few changes could have been great.
