Blood & Honey
by Shelby Mahurin
Thank you to Harper360ya for sending me an E-ARC of Blood & Honey I really appreciate this opportunity. Blood & Honey is the second book in the Serpent & Dove series. I read the first book, Serpent & Dove earlier on in the year and really enjoyed it so it is safe to say I was super excited to give this one a go. I had heard a mixture of reviews from people that had already read it, so I lowered my expectations slightly to try and avoid disappointment. I was not disappointed in the slightest, I really enjoyed it. I liked it just as much as I liked Serpent & Dove.
What I will say is that Blood & Honey is no where near as action packed as Serpent & Dove was. It took until the 60% mark to really get going with the action. For me that made room for more character building that I feel we really needed after the first book. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of action in this book but it is not as constant and definitely has a slow burn plot which may not be for everybody. BUT as soon as you get past that 60% mark you will definitely struggle to put it down. As soon as I got to this point I found myself having less sleep at night because I just have no discipline and did not want to put the book down. Blood & Honey is certainly to blame if I lose my job through tiredness and lack of concentration.
I love Lou so much, her sassyness is just excellent. It is what made me fall in love with her in Serpent & Dove and this personality trait really shines through in Blood & Honey. She had me laughing out loud from the first page with some of the things she says, she just does not care. That is my kind of gal. Team Lou! Reid, oh Reid. This book is certainly the one that helped me to fall in love with Reid. It really is a journey of him discovering himself, learning to cope with his new life and also how to cope with the events of the previous book. Reid really did shine for me. I mean I really liked all of the characters, but another that stood out for me is Ansel. I loved him in Serpent & Dove but I love him even more in this one. The characters in this book definitely contributed massively to my now broken heart. I won't go into detail as I want to be able to give a spoiler free review, but please talk to me if you have read this book because I need to discuss with someone.
The ending of this book broke me in ways I didn't know it could. It has been 12 hours since I finished and I couldn't bring myself to write a review until now. WHAT AN ENDING. I just cant put into words how much this has had an impact on me. As soon as I finished I immediately researched whether there was going to be another book and apparently there is! I NEED IT NOW.
I really enjoyed Blood & Honey and thought that it equally compared to Serpent & Dove, I enjoyed them both in different ways. I would recommend and will be continuing to recommend this series. Blood & Honey will be released in the UK on 17th September and you should definitely preorder/put it on your list.
