How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House
by Cherie Jones
Summer Book Bingo-2021-Set in a place you'd like to know more about
While this novel portrays a sense of place, the fictional Baxter Beach in Barbados, it is more about the characters who inhabit this community. The characters are well developed, relatable, and realistic. The author writes from the POV of several characters at a few different points in time.
This novel addresses issues of race, class, and women. The author portrays the differences between the wealthy tourists and the poverty of the year round residents who work to serve them, sometimes in illegal ways. In this community, women are objectified and abused, and yet are somehow able to carry on and hope for a brighter future.
Reading about the differences between extreme wealth and extreme poverty caused me to think about how this alone is at the root of much violence, pain, and suffering in our world today.
Although the writing is beautiful, this book addresses some tough issues and there are scenes of violence, so I would not recommend it for the faint of heart.
